When I Built my First PC
My dad and I were on our way to my dad’s school. I was telling him how I was watching Austin Evans videos and that he was building PC’s and I want to build a PC. When my dad heard what I had to say He said, “I have a surprise for you at the school.”
When we got there he pulled out an old broken PC from his trunk. It was small, the color was black and grey. He said, “I wanted to bring this old PC to the school because I thought it would be good to try and teach the kids how to build a PC, but… since you’re here and want to build a PC I think it would be good for you to have it and make it work. There are also two other broken PCs that you can use for parts.” My dream just came true, and I would get to build a PC.
When we went inside the school, I immediately set up my work station with a table, screwdriver, power outlet, and 3 broken PC’s. I set to work. First I plugged them in to see if they started the boot sequence. The one for parts did not show any sign of functionality, but the one my dad brought turned on but would not boot into Windows 7. So I decided to open up the side panel and set to work. One had a hard drive with a Linux processor installed and the other with Windows 7. I moved the Linux hard drive to the PC my dad gave me so that I could choose to run Windows or Linux when I boot into the bios. Next, I moved all the ram to the good PC. Then I swapped the CPUs from a 2nd generation Core i5 to an AMD Ryzen Series CPU.
I was proud of myself after I did this. I was doing pretty good so far. After I made sure all of the connections were good, then turned it on, I heard the fan turn on, but It did not boot into the bios, or anything. I asked my dad for help and he told me “usually when that happens the power supply is faulty, you should get a new one.” I got out my computer and opened Amazon. I search for a PC power supply. I found an EVGA 500 W1 power supply for $50. “$50?!” I said. “That is too much money for my budget of $0.” It crushed me to know that I would not be able to finish the PC. I asked my dad to get it for me and he told me he did not have the money for that right now. So that was it. I was done. I would have to wait until I had some money, which would take a long long time.
That was the summer of 2019(a year ago). I saved up my money, and only last week I got my power supply. Once I got the power supply I could boot up the PC and update it to Windows 10. Once it was updated it was a more enjoyable experience to use. I have to say it was worth the wait. I love my desktop computer.
Now on my PC I can play video games, watch DVDs, Netflix, do homework :( , everything I need to do. This experience was important because now I know how to build computers and improved my skills with computers, and it creates a new job opportunity of computer engineering for me in the future.
