Disaster Trip
Ryan Schnell
I was on a plane to Hawaii with my family; we were taking our annual Christmas vacation. His time we were going to Maui instead of the Big Island. When we landed in Maui after our five-hour flight, we were relieved to see that beautiful Hawaiian sky with no clouds. Birds were chirping, and there was a man who was playing calming songs on the guitar. While we waited for our airport car, I took lots of photos of the incredible landscape. When we finally arrived at the hotel, it was very late, and we were exhausted, so we went to our room and crashed on the fluffy beds immediately.
When we woke up the next morning, we were disappointed to find out that thunder and lightning storms were crashing through the sky. My parents were trying to be optimistic and cheer us up, but I could tell they were as disappointed as I was. We had to stay inside at our hotel all day and play cards.
On the second day, we were prepared. When we found out that it was raining, we decided to go to a mini-golf place not far from our hotel. Once we got there, the wind started to pick up, and my mom had to hold an umbrella over everyone while they were putting, so they could see through the rain. After mini-golf, we were so soaked that we decided to head back to the hotel to shower and then change into dry clothes.
After changing, we got back in the car to go out to a nice dinner in the nearby town. We had to cross a small bridge to get there, but once we crossed the bridge, the police shut a gate between us and the bridge! We were trapped. My dad pulled over and asked the policeman what happened. The policeman said,” The deck is flooding, you have to stay in town until the rain slows. So our family pulled over to the restaurant where we would be eating during the storm. We sprinted through the pounding rain to get inside. Once we got in there, I felt the warm sensation of all of the grills and ovens cooking food for other people in the restaurant. When we ordered our food, the rain was still coming down, and we started to worry about how long we would have to be there. When our food came, it was a great distraction from the rain. It was delicious.
After we finished, the rain still hadn’t. The owner told us that most of the chefs live on the other side of the bridge so they couldn’t get over either. All food and drink would be free for the rest of the night. That cheered us up a little, but after a while, we left and got in line to wait for the bridge to open again. We had been waiting for so long when the bridge finally opened, and we could go back to the hotel. I don’t remember much of what happened after that because I was so tired, but when I woke up late the next morning, I felt well-rested.
It was Christmas, and thankfully a beautiful day, the first one we had in Hawaii. My parents had a plan to drive up a beautiful mountain for sightseeing. We made a couple of stops on our way to the top to take photos. We saw beautiful mountains in the distance with lots of birds flying above us. When we were almost to the top, our car started to sputter and churn, and next thing we knew, we were broken down in the middle of the road on a steep mountain on Christmas. It was 97 degrees out, and we were stranded on the steepest hill in Hawaii. My Mom and I were working the traffic around our car while my dad was calling the police to see if they could come to get us. When they finally arrived after waiting for an hour in the blazing hot sun, a police officer came who helped us start the car and escort us down the mountain.
When we got back to the hotel, we were all getting a little tired of the bad luck we had been having. So when I went to bed that night, I was not very happy that we still had two days left on our vacation. When I woke up the next morning, my parents surprised me that we were going on a jungle tour. This cheered me up since the rest of the vacation had not been very good. When we got to the place, I was happy to see the beautiful forest. We saw lots of beautiful birds and lizards. We met our guide, name, who took us on a beautiful hike. When we got down the hill, we saw a calm river. The water was glowing with the reflection of the sun, and small ripples were being made all across the water by little leaves. We then got in kyaks and cruised down the river. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The birds were chirping, and the gentle sound of the water swished back and forth. It was the most peaceful I had ever felt. I felt like I was out of my body, and nothing wrong could happen to me.
When we got on the plane the next day, I had forgotten about all of the things I didn’t like about the trip. That was the craziest vacation of my life.
